Born in 1941 in Berlin, Germany in the middle of the Second World War, Barbara, the author grew up with her mother and three siblings in a suburb of Berlin. She tells other children in this book about her life in Berlin without television, computers, washing machines, refrigerators, cars and other modern comforts we now take for granted. It was a simple life, but filled with love of family, friends and her grandparents who played an important part in her young life. The book also contains some translations of English words into German, an easy way for a child to learn some German words. Barbara now lives in Kansas City, has two daughters and four grandchildren. Two more beautiful grandchildren came into the world since the book was initially written for her first two little grandchildren and then published by her.

This title was written for children ages four and up and adults alike. It tells short stories about the author's life as a young girl in Berlin, Germany after the war. The book is intended to tell readers that a life without modern inventions and conveniences such as television, refrigerators, washing machines and computers can still be a happy and fulfilled life. Sometimes life today gets too complicated and hectic, as we all know. Life back then without bank statements, Fico scores, fast cars and clogged super highways was simple and yet, there was more time for playing games with children and grandchildren, walking with them, talking to them and just spending more time with them. Often, the author thinks these were the better times.
The author's illustrations (some based on old photographs)to the stories give a more in-depth glimpse into what life was like then.
This is a book that can educate as well as entertain children. It gives children the opportunity to see how life was for the author when she was a child both at home and on her first day of school. Readers will get the chance to learn a few basic words of German. I found it very interesting to see what the first day of school was like for her back in those days. Much different than here in the USA. She had a great family who carried on the old traditions of Christmas time even in spite of the times. I highly recommend this book as a gift. It is rare to find a book written and illustrated by one person.
